Sedation in dentistry covers a number of techniques that are used to reduce the anxiety and trauma of a dental appointment.

Many people are anxious about visiting the dentist; this can mean that they do not receive the care that they need. Dental problems worsen if untreated, so delay often means larger, more expensive and potentially painful treatment becomes necessary. Even if the patient is not unduly anxious, Sedation can still make a long appointment easier to tolerate and more comfortable.

The technique most widely used and tolerated by adult patients is Intravenous Sedation. This uses medication to put the patient in a very relaxed, dreamlike state whilst treatment is carried out. The patient remains conscious but with very little awareness of their environment or any treatment, and they usually have no memory of their visit.

For the dentist, sedation makes treatment easier to perform and means more treatment can be carried out at each appointment. This reduces the number of sessions necessary to complete the course of treatment.
Sedation is very safe and the patient is closely monitored throughout the appointment. Meals should be taken as usual and they will need to be accompanied home.

When choosing the right sedation dentist it is most important to choose one that is sympathetic to the patient’s fears and has the time to ensure that they are receive the care they need.
