Sports Injuries

How to protect your teeth

If you play a contact sport, wearing a custom-made mouthguard will protect your teeth from damage.

The British Dental Association advises against shop-bought mouthguards because they may not fit correctly and so won’t protect your teeth properly.

30% of all 16-year-olds have suffered an injury to their teeth resulting in permanent damage.

20% of these injuries occurred while taking part in organised sport.

Advice

Children and adults should wear a mouthguard for playing any contact sport, including:

  • Rugby
  • Hockey
  • Lacrosse
  • Squash
  • Martial arts
  • Mountain biking

The Rugby Football Union and English Hockey Association both recommend using custom-made mouthguards.

  • My recent visit to El-Nashar to visit Chris Roberts, Dentist and Terry Weir, Hygienist were as usual 100% fully professional and approachable and willing to discuss issues and options etc. Thanks also to all the receptionist staff who couldn't be more helpful. Plus a nice free coffee machine to boot and reasonable free local parking nearby makes the service both easy to attend and relatively painless to endure!! Joking, no pain so far. Top Marks!   • Best dentist in the area! We joined over 10 years ago and they cured my fear of the dentist! All staff are so friendly, everyone is so welcoming and always smiling! Andrew our dentist is brilliant, explains everything he’s doing, what he’s looking for and is so great with the children (my two actually love going to the dentist!) the nurse was also amazing, so lovely with the children and made us all feel at ease. We also had Sian as our hygienist today and she was so lovely, explained everything and made sure I was comfortable. Great experience, highly recommend😊
